Home Security

Home Security is a topic that is very near and dear to my heart. I have wanted to write an article about this for a while in hopes that my experience can help you. I'm confident that many houses already have a security system and many others may feel like they live in a nice and safe area and don't need one. I can tell you for certain that you can be a victim. I can tell you this because it happened to my family. We live in a nice middle class neighborhood and it was the middle of the day. Did I mention our kids were home (16 and 6) and we had a barking dog. I can't even explain to you the feeling in my gut when I received a call from the police chief while at work. He assured me the kids were fine and someone would stay there with them unil I got home. I stress to you I can't even put into words the feelings racing through my body on that 20 mile drive home. This is a situation we all pray we will never be faced with. Once I got home my front door had been kicked in and a police officer was collecting finger prints and performing the tasks you might expect. As I looked into the eyes of my children I had never felt like such a failure of a father. The one thing kids should be able to count on from a father is that he will keep them safe. I failed on that day and will live with that the rest of my life. The good news is that based on information provided by a couple firemen that drove down our street they had some leads to work with. Over the next several weeks all three of the people that broke into our house were arrested. These were not nice people! Two had spent the better part of the last two decades in prision. The third happened to be one of their daughters. Don't feel sorry for her she was grown and had her own issues with the law. So once court dates started we had to stand with our children in a hallway looking at the people that broke into our home. My kids were tough and said it was ok but, I'm sure they were scared. I know my son who was six at the time told the story of him and his sister hiding in the closet and calling 911 thousands of times. I am very happy my kids stayed calm hid and called the police. They handled the situation perfectly. So at this point in the story you probably think everything is all good. Criminals arrested, court dates set etc. Well this is where the system starts to fall apart. So the woman got probation as she supposedly never came inside the house. She was just the lookout and driver and apparently in the eyes of the law that is not a serious crime. Her father received 3 to 5 years for receiving stolen property because after receiving probabtion she disappeard and couldn't testify. The third suspect got some serious time but, not from our breakin. He was caught on video a few days after our breakin robbing another home. I suppose I'm happy it is over and very thankful my children weren't harmed but, I am still shaking my head about the fact that the system apparently doesn't take home invasion serious. I don't know about you but, for me your home is your piece of the world and if someone invades that space it really can't get more serious.
So what did I learn about keeping my home and children safe. I learned that withought a doubt hands down the number one thing.... Make it appear as if someone is home alway always always. Lights, TV, car in the driveway. It would seem that criminals just drive down the street and look for a house where no one is home. They park in the driveway like they belong and walk up and knock on the door. If the door is answered they make up some excuse whey they are knocking and leave. If there is no answer and nothing going on in the house they kick the door down. I assure you 3" screws attaching the hinges to the door jam don't really hold. The door jam will split in half and the door opens. It will probably only take two or three kicks. Now dont get me wrong long screws into the door jam help some but, please don't assume you are safe. The other lesson I learned is that security video is the only way you will get a conviction! If you don't have video they will only be convicted of receiving stolen property. The other thing is make sure you have a plan. Talk to your children and make sure they know what to do. If you are ever in this situation you will not have time to figure out what to do. I am so thankful that we had discussed things like this with our kids and they did exactly what they needed to do. I can't stress enough BE PREPARED! I really hope that my story will help you in some way. Please don't wait to protect your home and family.
We have since installed an ADT alarm system. The system works well and I really don't have any "complaints" and I am confident it will perform as expected. The only things that I don't really care for with this system is that we had to sign a lenghty contract and cost. I like that the system is monitored 24x7 but, I am not convinced that is really nessesary. I personally think if someone tries to break in and the alarm siren goes off chances are they flee. If they still enter your home with the sirens going off I really hope you support the 2nd amendment because this is a very serious situation. My advise in that situation is 1.) hide 2.) call 911 3.) Protect yourself and family by any means nessesary! If I had the homesecurity system decision to do over I probably wouldn't go with the system I have. I would probably go with Simplisafe. I have been looking at their products and think this is probably the best do it yourself system. They offer everything you need motion sensors, door and window sensors, remote controls, DVR video camers. The system is all wireless and seems to be easy to install. Also I like that you do not need to sign a contract. That is a big plus in my book. The system is expandable as your needs change also.
